Chinese medicine students win honours in Pan-Pearl River Delta contest

A team of four Year 5 students from the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) recently won the Champion Group (Hong Kong-Macau category) award for their exceptional performance in a pan-Pearl River competition. The students, majoring in Chinese Medicine and Biomedical Science, won the Fourth Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Chinese Medicine University Students Clinical Competence Contest, organised by the Chinese Medicine Teaching Steering Committee of the Higher Education under the State Ministry of Education.

It was the second straight year that an SCM team has won this award. This year’s team comprised Chen Ludan, Li Hin-yeung, Chu Pak-hin and Bian Yan, who also won the second-runner up prize in the individual session on tui na manipulation.

This year’s competition was held in the Wenjiang Campus of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), attracting 14 TCM tertiary institutions from the Chinese mainland, Macau and Hong Kong. They were Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Chengdu University of TCM, Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine, Fujian University of TCM, Jiangxi University of TCM, Yunnan University of TCM, Guiyang College of TCM, Guangzhou Medical University, Southwest Medical University, Hainan Medical University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Macau University of Science and Technology.

Each team participant was required to complete the first session based on Chinese medicine fundamentals and clinical theory, and then compete in the other two to three sessions with contestants of other teams. The contest covered areas ranging from TCM classical knowledge and skills of Chinese materia medica, Chinese medicine formulas, diagnostics of Chinese medicine (tongue and pulse examination techniques), communication skills in clinical consultation, acupuncture, tui na manipulation to Chinese medicine for treatment of dermatological diseases, and included a role-playing exercise in an emergency case.
