Speaking Professionally @ HKBU

Background and Objectives

Speaking professionally is an absolute advantage and simply a must-have for all university students/graduates for job search and career success.  Students who can present themselves effectively and confidently are going to gain ample opportunities and enhance their employability.

Effective speakers can be made. Speaking Professionally@HKBU is an initiative driven by the Career Centre (CC) to increase HKBU students’ confidence and ability in speaking English, especially under career-related contexts like job interviews, group discussions and networking with industries’ professionals. Speaking Professionally@HKBU aims to offer students opportunities and constructive advice to improve their English speaking skills and boost their confidence in prepared and impromptu speeches.  Students will learn to use proper English to organize and present ideas logically and convincingly.

Peer Support Circles will be available soon. Stay-tuned!

English Buddies who are also HKBU students will help organize some practice sessions such as group discussions or social minglings.  Within a small group of 4-5 students with an English Buddy as the facilitator, students will be given a chance to have mock self-introduction and topic speaking (e.g. current affairs) practice. Participants can then give each other constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Presentation Clinics will be hosted regularly from April onwards.

Professional presentation trainers will be invited to conduct a 30-minute consultation session,  either face-to-face or online, for HKBU students. In a Presentation Clinic, a student has to prepare a five-minute career-related presentation in English and present it to the trainer.  The trainer will then give constructive feedback and advice for improvement.

Alternately, students can also choose to videotape a three-minute short video introducing themselves. Feedback from professional presentation trainers will then be sent back to them.
