Policy & Legal Matters: Non-local Taught Postgraduates
The restriction in respect of internship and part-time employment for non-local students has been relaxed from the 2008/09 academic year onwards.
Eligible students will be notified of the relaxation individually by a “No Objection Letter” (NOL) upon approval of entry and extension of stay applications. The NOL will spell out the type(s) and conditions of employment which the student may take up. See sample NOLs (1) (2) .
Non-local students of full-time degree programmes whose study period is not less than one academic year may take up internship subject to the following conditions:
- The internships must be study/curriculum-related and be arranged or endorsed by the institutions they are studying in; and
- The duration of the internship is up to one academic year, or one-third of the normal duration of the relevant full-time academic programme, whichever is the shorter.

Since internships must be study/curriculum-related. Please check out from the programme list whether your study programme has allowed internship as part of the study/curriculum.
For study programme which has allowed study/curriculum-related internship, students are required to complete the following before taking up the internships:
A separate ‘no objection letter’ (NOL) on term-time internship will be issued when a student visa/entry permit is granted. For application, please follow the below procedures:
Before an internship, the student must
- 1. get the employment letter;
- 2. get the endorsement from your programme (i.e., a confirmation letter/email from the programme which certifies the eligibility for internships during term time);
- Your programme will pass 1 and 2 above to Graduate School for record, and inspection if necessary, by the Immigration Department.
For study programme which has not allowed study/curriculum-related internship, students are normally not approved to take up internship.

Non-local students of full-time locally-accredited programmes at degree level or above whose study period is not less than one academic year (excluding exchange students) are allowed to take up employment during the summer months (1 June – 31 August, both days inclusive) without any limit in relation to work hours and location within their study period.
Part-time on campus employment
Non-local students of full-time locally-accredited programmes at degree level or above whose study period is not less than one academic year (excluding exchange students) are allowed to take up part-time on campus employment for not more than 20 hours per week throughout the year.
The employment must take place within the campus of the university (including only the campus of the university which the non-local student is enrolling, and excluding the campus of any subsidiary and associated body of the relevant university proper or its self-financing arms) where the non-local student is studying or, if the work location is outside campus of the university, the employer is the university itself.
Students will not be allowed to roll-over unused hours from one week to another; a week refers to a period of seven days from Sunday to Saturday.
*According to University Guidelines, students are strongly advised not to take part-time on campus employment for over 12 hours per week.

Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG)
Non-local graduates who submit applications to the Immigration Department within six months after the date of their graduation (i.e. the date shown on their graduation certificates) are classified as non-local fresh graduates.
Fresh graduates may be granted 12 months’ stay on time limitation without other conditions of stay provided that normal immigration requirements are met.

In early July (for students graduated in late June) or early October (for students graduated in late September) every year, Graduate School will give all graduates a copy of academic records sent by post to their correspondence address as recorded in the University Information System (UIS). You can use it as a proof of graduation from the University when you apply to the
Immigration Department for extension of stay.
In the event that you have lost this transcript of academic records, you may apply to the Graduate School for a testimonial or an academic transcript (student copy) to serve as a proof of graduation.
