Scholarships

AIA Foundation established the AIA Scholarships in 2020 and has pledged US$100 million to support 100 undergraduates every year to pursue studies at universities in Hong Kong over the next few decades. For the academic year 2024-25, 7 awards of HK$50,000 each per annum, renewable for each academic year to support the full course of undergraduate study, will be available for local full-time Year 1 undergraduate students who are enrolled in UGC-funded first degree programmes at HKBU immediately succeeding completion of their senior secondary school education.

Applicants should demonstrate excellent academic performance with a minimum GPA of 3.00 in the first semester of 2024-25 as well as a good record of community service or charitable work.

 

ELIGIBILITY 

Application is now open to full-time local Year 1 undergraduate students who are enrolled in UGC-funded degree programmes, and who: 

  1. are HKSAR permanent resident, or have entered Hong Kong on One-way Permits;
  2. have resided in the Hong Kong continuously for at least Three complete years immediately prior to the commencement of their undergraduate programme
  3. have received their senior secondary education in Hong Kong, including those who have studied local (e.g. Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education) and international curricula (e.g. International Baccalaureate)
  4. Are pursuing their first undergraduate degree immediately succeeding completion of their senior secondary school education
  5. demonstrate excellent academic performance with a minimum GPA of 3.00 in the first semester of the first year of their undergraduate programmes;
  6. demonstrate a record of community service or charitable work, undertaken prior to their application for the AIA Scholarships; and
  7. must NOT be a recipient of an entrance or admission scholarships granted by HKBU**.

**Successful applicants who have already been awarded an entrance scholarship that subsidises their local tuition fees will be required to relinquish such scholarships once they confirm acceptance of an AIA Scholarship, so that those resources are directed back to the University.

 

APPLICATION

1. Please click here to download and complete the application form by typing. Pen-signed or stylus signed P.3 of the completed form. 

2. Combine your signed form and all copies of required supporting documents into ONE (1) PDF file.

3. Name your PDF file in the format of "AIA_student ID_full name" (e.g. AIA_23201111_Chan Tai Man). We may not be able to identify your submission if you do not name your file as instructed.

4. Make sure the scans of your documents are clear and legible. Any parts that are missing, unclear, and incomprehensible will NOT be considered.

5. Try to keep your pdf file under 25MB. You may not need to scan the documents in the highest/top quality if standard quality suffice. Your PDF file should NOT exceed 25MB.

6. Login to our “Documents Upload Platform” at https://sfa.hkbu.edu.hk/supporting_docs/ with your SSOid. Choose and click “AIA Scholarships” in the menu to upload the documents. We will NOT be able to receive your documents if you choose another scheme, so please click the scheme name carefully. The “Documents Upload Platform” will close automatically at the application deadline 11:59 pm of 17 January 2025 (Friday). You will receive an auto-email from the system upon successful upload of your PDF file.

7. To avoid being late, you should upload your PDF well before the deadline, as there may be unexpected technical errors/difficulties that require you extra time to solve. Note that the submission time is subject to our system’s clock on the website, which may or may not be the same as your watch, and the Office of Student Affairs has the discretion to make final judgments on whether the application is considered late.

You may print out/scan your SLES record (https://sles.hkbu.edu.hk/) as supporting proofs for HKBU internal activities/ service/ scholarships. Copies of certificates, letters, name cards, emails, magazines, webpages, newspaper clippings and/or other documents that have (1) your name, (2) the position held and (3) the organization name can be used as the supporting documents for your activities/ services if they do not appear on your SLES record. However, please highlight the relevant information on the documents for easy identification. Note that activities/services listed on the form but without proofs will NOT be counted.

Partial submissions / late applications will NOT be considered.  Form submission via hardcopy or email is not accepted.

SELECTION

  1. All applications will be reviewed by an internal selection panel, with the primary criteria being academic merit and involvement in community services or charitable work. In case where candidates have equal merit, priority will be given to students from financialy disadvantaged families who may not have the opportunity to pursue a university education otherwise. Indicators of financial need can include, but are not limited to: a) being recipients of Hong Kong Government Grants/ loans; and/ or b) being from families who are recipients of Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (“CSSA”).
  2. After the internal paper vetting process, shortlisted students will be invited to submit a 1-min self-introduction video by the end of January 2025. Up to 14 candidates will then be nominated for the final selection by the AIA Foundation.
  3. AIA will confirm the final awardees for the AIA Scholarships between March and April 2025. Awardees will be required to sign an award letter and acknowledgement of the Terms & Conditions for receiving the Scholarship. In addition, all awardees are obliged to attend the mandatory award presentation ceremony, tentatively scheduled for September 2025.
