Alternative housing options

Many students choose private rental properties instead of on-campus accommodation provided by the university, such as private residence, serviced apartments and hotels. Popular districts include Shatin, Tai Wai, Hung Hom, Kowloon City, Mong Kok and Prince Edward, etc. Student Accommodation Section provides suggestions and precautions on renting private properties, for more information, please refer to: https://sa.hkbu.edu.hk/en/accm/living-off-campus/steps-of-renting-off-campus

The tenancy practice between the Mainland and Hong Kong are quite different. Before renting a flat, students are advised to better understand Hong Kong’s rental regulations and details, such as subletting, sub-letting by original tenants, contract details, lease cancellation arrangements, etc. Before renting private property, students should read the relevant information provided by the Estate Agents Authority carefully to understand the details:

Clothing

Hong Kong’s summer is blistering. There is a big temperature difference between indoor and outdoor when the indoor temperature is maintained at around 20-25°C with air-conditioning. Different kinds of clothing like short sleeves or long sleeves T-shirt, thin coat, cardigan and so on are suggested. Housings in Hong Kong usually do not have outdoor place for drying the clothes. It is hard to dry the clothes in the humid and rainy season except using dryers or dehumidifiers. Moisture absorber and moth balls are recommended to be placed in the closets to prevent your clothes from musty smell and keep them away from insects. In winter, more sweaters and coats are required.

Remarks: Air-conditioning is commonly used in classroom, various modes of transportations, shops and shopping malls, etc. in Hong Kong to maintain airflow and an ideal temperature. To adjust to the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor, students are advised to bring jackets to avoid catching a cold due to fluctuations.

Electric adapter

Hong Kong adopts the British standard electrical outlet plug which is different from those in use in Mainland China. Electricity appliances in Mainland China cannot be used directly in Hong Kong. Preparing electric adapters before arriving Hong Kong is recommended.

There are two types of SIM cards in Hong Kong: value-added card and service plan.

Value-added card:

Similar to the SIM cards in Mainland China, value-added cards provide fixed amount of mobile call time and mobile data. Value can be added to the SIM card when the call time and/or data is nearly used up. Value-added cards can be purchased at convenient stores and telecom operators. However, like that of Mainland China, registration is required.

Service Plan:

Service plan is provided on a monthly basis. Students can choose a suitable plan according to their needs. Applicants for service plan should be 18 or above. HKID card and residential address proof is required for registering a mobile number. Students aged under 18 can purchase value-added card first.

Hong Kong’s education emphasizes bilingualism which equips students to go global. English is the official language of HKBU for teaching except Chinese related courses and other language courses.

The University also provides different foreign language courses (either credit-bearing or non-credit-bearing) for students. For example, the Mainland Student Services Unit offers Cantonese class for non-local students; Language Centre provides courses on Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, etc. for all students.

The two main teaching modes in the university are lecture and tutorial. Professors give presentations in lectures. In tutorials, tutors guide students to discuss and present in groups with the aim of facilitating exchange of ideas. Besides, for particular programmes, there are experiments, workshops and internships based on the design of each programme.

University education focuses on proactive learning and critical thinking. Apart from learning in lectures, students should do research individually or study in groups to accomplish required coursework like group projects and final term papers.

The Hong Kong Observatory has established various weather warning signals, such as rainstorm warnings, tropical cyclone signals, very hot weather warning, and cold weather warning, to help Hong Kong residents prepare for sudden weather changes. These weather warnings are closely related to students' daily lives and studies, as bad weather may lead to class cancellations, rescheduling of exams, and transportation disruptions. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that students install the Hong Kong Observatory mobile APP and enable real-time notifications to stay updated on the latest weather conditions in Hong Kong.

Online Application: http://zwfw.cscse.edu.cn/

Students, who have completed their study programme and planned to stay for employment in Hong Kong, should apply for Immigration Arrangement for Non-local Graduates (IANG) at Hong Kong the Immigration Department. Successful applicants can stay and work in Hong Kong for two years. Students who submit an application within 6 months after graduation will be regarded as “stay for work in Hong Kong” even though they have not yet been employed. Application that is handed in after the student has graduated for 6 months is regarded as “return for work in Hong Kong”, which means that the applicant needs to be employed by a company in Hong Kong already when the application is made.

Students can prepare documents such as the Graduation Letter (please refer to Graduation Letter), the Letter of consent from the applicant’s present working unit or relevant Mainland authorities, and the Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP), etc. and submit them online: https://www.gov.hk/en/residents/immigration/nonpermanent/applyiang/npr.htm

Graduates should find out when they can get IANG and discuss the relevant arrangements with the employer to ensure that the employment is legal.
  2. For official information about this visa, students should refer to the announcements on website Immigration Arrangement for Non-local Graduates of the Immigration Department.

Job market information can be found on the internet in Hong Kong. Most companies or enterprises will advertise their job openings on websites of recruitment or Labor Department. Job finders are usually required to send a cover letter and their resume to companies or enterprises according to the requirements stated in the advertisement. For the convenience of job finders, it is very common that advertisements are categorised by profession and job nature.

People who are self-employed play both the role of employer and employee and have no full-time employment contract. Startup business is an example.
Some companies request the employee to sign a self-employment contract (usually in financial or real estate jobs). Students are reminded to read carefully about the terms and clauses of the contract before signing it. Renewal of IANG may not be approved by the Immigration Department if the applicant cannot provide supporting documents such as a contract of full-time employment or related employment proof.
