Following last year's success, Career Centre is launching the Technology Empowerment (Python for Data Science) Scheme 2022 again! This beginner-friendly programme aims at helping students with no technical coding background to learn how to analyse data using Python and to gain hands-on working experience. Upon completion of the trainings, eligible students shall be matched with a summer internship or part-time internship opportunity.

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate & taught post-graduate students of all disciplines
  • No technical coding background / experience is required

Key Learning Objectives: 

  1. To transform students with no or limited technical knowledge into confident users of technology through building simple Python and data science projects
  2. To empower participants to seek technological solutions to solve real-world problems 

Medium of Instruction: English supplemented with Cantonese

Attendance Requirement: At least 80% of the course (i.e. 24 hours)

Course Content: Students join this Python programme, to learn the scaleable programming language, which is essential to beginners. The curriculum is suitable for people who have no programming experience or already know basic programming. This complete course goes over commercial uses of advanced Python for job seekers in Hong Kong. The course is used by some of the top data scientists in HK today. What students will learn in the Python course:  

  • Basic Python - Learn the basics of Python programming. Unlock your programming skills with the most popular data science language 
  • Web Crawling - Learn modern data collection techniques to extract from web with Python 
  • Data analytics - Become familiar with the industry standard database language – SQL 
  • Data Structures - Learn how to write advanced code with Data Structure Master technical interview skills with intensive coding exercises
  • Databases - Learn to store, access, and manipulate huge amounts of data with Pandas and Numpy
  • BI Reporting - Build a Tableau dashboard – create full-fledged interactive visualization

What to Expect?

  • 30-hours online Python trainings
  • Summer / Part-time internship placement* (Refer to the section of Internship Placement for the eligibility requirements)
  • Certificate of Course Completion* (Must attend at least 80% of the training (i.e. 24 hours))

Remarks:

  • The proposed class dates and time are subject to HKBU Career Centre's final confirmation.
  • The deposit (HK$1,501) shall ONLY be fully refunded upon fulfilment of over 80% of the course attendance (i.e 24 hours).

Upon completion of the trainings, qualified students* will be matched with a summer / part-time internship to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills.

Internship Duration: To be confirmed 
*After confirmation of the internship offers, student interns may negotiate their work schedule with the employers upon their schedule. 

Internship Salary: To be confirmed (*HK$4,000 under the Subsidised Internship Scheme)
Remarks:
(1) Career Centre has offered the Subsidized Internship Scheme of which eligible students may apply for HK$4,000 subsidy allowance upon completion of the internship. Student interns must attend the internship for at least 6 weeks (full-time) or 150 hours (part-time).

(2) Final year students please be aware of the expiry date of your BU student status. If the internship placement ends after the expiry date of your BU student status, you shall NOT be eligible to apply for the Subsidized Internship Scheme.

 

Internship Mode: Face-to-face

Selection Criteria*:

  • Fulfilling over 80% of course attendance (i.e. 24 hours out of 30 hours)
  • Passing the interview & selection process by the employer*
