The University is an adult environment and the student shall be generally treated as an adult and abide by any regulations, rules, procedures and policies of the University. While the following have to be noted when handling issues involved minor students who are under the age of 18.
All new students who are aged under 18 are required to have their parents/legal guardians signed and returned a ‘consent letter’ to the Academic Registry prior to the start of the academic year. The consent letter gives the right for the student concerned to act on his/her own regard to activities related to his/her study programme and extracurricular activities organized by departments or student organizations of HKBU, including overnight activities, overseas study tours, internships, placements, and field trips.
To safeguard the well-being of students, the University may need to contact their parents/guardians under emergency situations, such as accidents. It is necessary to provide the University with the emergency contacts of their parents/guardians and update such records when necessary.
Students who will be participating in internships or part-time work are reminded of the restrictions stipulated under the Employment of Young Persons (Industry) Regulations on certain work settings and conditions. Details of the regulations can be found at the guide (中文版本) provided by the Labour Department.
There are areas in the University which are open 24 hours daily to facilitate student learning, such as the University Library and the Learning Commons. Students should observe the relevant users’ guidelines and inform parents/guardians that they are staying on campus overnight.
According to the law, it is strictly prohibited to sell alcoholic drinks to minors under the aged of 18. Nonetheless, in some social occasions, such as high table dinners organized with presence of staff, alcoholic drinks would be served. Students under the age of 18 should abstain from drinking alcohol.
