Representing Undergraduates / Research Postgraduates to the Senate 2023/2024

Besides joining various extra-curricular activities on campus, many students are concerned about the university’s academic development. Have you considered having a direct channel to reflect your views to the University? Participating in the Senate might be one of the formal ways! It is essential to have students’ voices in the Senate. You may achieve these by running in the Election of Student Members to the Senate 2023/2024!

The Senate is the highest authority on all academic-related matters of the University. Its powers and duties include:

  • Promoting and guiding the development of academic programmes and courses;
  • Promoting and regulating teaching, learning and research activities;
  • Making regulations on various academic affairs, including admission, promotion, registration, graduation and residence of students; and
  • Deciding on matters affecting the welfare and discipline of students.

What is Senate?
The Senate is the supreme academic body of the University. It oversees the University’s academic development, teaching and learning, conferment of degrees, and the welfare and discipline of students.

Who represents students in the Senate?
There are 12 student members in the Senate, including:

  • President of the Students’ Union (ex-officio);
  • President of the Postgraduate Association (ex-officio);
  • eight undergraduates, elected from each Faculty & School; and
  • two postgraduates (one from taught programmes and one from research programmes).

Student members have their voices heard in the University policy-making process by attending the meetings of the Senate and its sub-committees.

Election of Student Members to the Senate 2023/2024

You are cordially invited to participate in the Election of Student Members to the Senate 2023/2024. Eight undergraduate members from each Faculty & School and one representative for research postgraduates will be elected in this Election exercise. The members’ term of office will commence from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024.

Undergraduates
You may fill in the online nomination form and secure the support of one proposer and 10 seconders from your respective Faculty & School.

Postgraduates
You may fill in the online nomination form and secure the support of one proposer and two seconders postgraduates.

The important dates of the Election are:

8 – 21 March 2023
Publicity Period
27 March – 17 April 2023
Election Period
18 April (10:00 a.m.) – 21 April 2023 (5:00 p.m.)
