The HKBU Global Youth Summit 2017 was Successfully Held
Hong Kong Baptist University Global Youth Summit 2017 with the theme “Safe to Survive: Nuclear or Others” was successfully held during 4-5 March 2017. Hosted by Leadership Qualities Centre, Office of Student Affairs and sponsored by General Education Office, HKBU Century Club and Wofoo Social Enterprises, the Summit has attracted near 100 participants from local and non-local universities to gather together discussing about nuclear energy issues.
The Opening Ceremony was held at the Dr. Wu Yee Sun Lecture Theatre of Hong Kong Baptist University. Dr. Gilles Lepesant from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Unit Géographie-Cités, Paris), Miss Frances Yeung from Greenpeace East Asia, and Dr Daphne Mah from Department of Geography and Asian Energy Studies Centre were invited as keynote speakers. From their inspirational speeches, participants have gained a thorough understanding of nuclear energy developments and challenges and learned the possibility of developing renewable energy in Hong Kong and Europe generally. Participants shared ideas and engaged in an open discussion forum with speakers as well.
Most of the participants also joined the overnight camp at Breakthrough Youth Village where they learned more about nuclear energy knowledge through different experiential learning activities and reflected on the meaning of the activities by group discussion and presentation. Besides, they put themselves in different social roles to criticize the pros and cons of using nuclear energy and finally reflect on one’s attitude towards energy consumption.
