GAO Yujiao (Human Resources Management)
Recipient of
CV Starr Scholarship 2019-20

I am deeply honored to have been selected as the awardee of the Scholarship. In my opinion, the generous contribution is a recognition of my academic performance and my previous hard work. I don’t think I am a very smart person. I’d like to attribute my success to my diligence.

Rome was not built in one day. At the beginning of each semester, I would set long-term goals for myself, divide them into small pieces, and achieve them step by step. Every night before going to bed, I sort out the to-do tasks and timetable for the next day, and recorded them in the memo of my phone. The next day, I would stick to the plan and complete them one by one. If some of them cannot be finished, I would mark them down and set another deadline.

Besides, from my personal experience, proper relaxation and self-reward are significant to the success of achieving long-term goals. In year 1, when I took part in student societies for the first time, I was worried that it might affect my academic performance. But after being a student official for one year, I realized that my concerns were unnecessary at all. When I discussed the activity plan with my friends and participated in outdoor activities enjoying the fresh air, I was totally devoted and relaxed. When I came back to academic works, my working efficiency would be much higher, compared to the previous time when I was involved in studying for a long time without any diverting attention. Also, when the time for studying was reduced, I also learned to manage and schedule my time more effectively.

In addition, sometimes when I feel difficult to carry on, I would set rewards, such as getting cosmetics that I want or going to a famous restaurant which is popular on the Internet. I tell myself that, as long as I reach the goal, I can treat myself those awards. In this way, I can more easily stay motivated and finish the long-term work.
