Drawing on the conceptual framework of vertical and horizontal ties developed by Professor Ryan and original social network data collected by Professor Shin, this collaborative research explores hidden hierarchies within a seemingly homogenous migrant group: North Korean refugees in London.
Through quantitative and qualitative social network methods, the process through which refugees differentiate in-group members based on perceived status is uncovered. Vertical and horizontal ties are presented as a powerful conceptual lens for interpreting the structure and significance of relationships within migrant networks.
