HKBU Community Service Week 2023

Introduction 

To instil students’ with caring spirits and to build a more inclusive and equitable society, the HKBU Community Service Week was launched with the generous sponsorship from Tin Ka Ping Foundation in 2022. This year, a face-to-face mode will be adopted. Charitable organisations will be invited to host booths at HKBU to raise students’ awareness on the needs and livelihood of the underprivileged, while students will be recruited to design and deliver service to them. Through a series of activities, it is hoped that our students would be more empathetic towards the disadvantaged. 

Objectives

  • To apply skills and knowledge learnt in serving the underpriviledged ;
  • To show care and concern to the people in need by delivering service ; and
  • To realise and appreciate the strengths of the disadvantaged groups.

Remarks: Students are expected to understand Cantonese so as to communicate with the service recipients.

"HKBU Community Service Week 2023 - BUild LOVE 1.0 Service Fair"

Date: 16 - 17 February 2023 (Thu to Fri)

Time: 11:30 - 15:30

Venue: Amphitheatre, Li Promenade, Shaw Campus

 

The service fair aims to raise HKBU students' awareness towards the needs and livelihood of disadvantaged groups. 

 

Through display boards, interactive games and simulation experiences, students will be able to understand more about the challenges faced by the hearing impaired, wheelchair users, the elderly, and etc. Charity sales will also be organised to raise fund for different charitable initiatiives of the partner NGOs.  

 

It is hoped that through a series of activities, stuents will be more empathetic towards the needs of the service targets.

Venue: HKBU Campus

 

Before the service day, students will be equipped with basic skills and knowledge in serving the service targets through a workshop conducted by registered social workers. They will then be able to apply what they learnt in the service. 

 

During the service day, some of the service recipients will also share their talents and/ or personal stories to our students. It is hoped that our students will learn to realise and appreicate the strengths of the service targets after the service.

Students' Participation

In the HKBU Community Service Week 2023, students can either participate as Organising Committee Members (OC) or Volunteers. Besides carrying out volunteer services, OC will assist in the overall programme delivery and take up leadership roles during service day, while volunteers will be responsible for designing and delivering voluntary services.

HKBU Community Service Week 2023 - BUild LOVE 2.0 Service Day
 

"HKBU Community Service Week 2023 - BUild LOVE 2.0 Service Day" will be held on 1 April 2023, 10:00am to 4:00pm. In this event, 250 underprivileged will come to HKBU and receive services from our student volunteers. To foster students' creativity and leadership, those services will be designed and delieved by students. Student volunteers will also receive trainings and guidances by professional staff from NGOs in March. 

Besides delievering services, there are some interesting activities for HKBU students to interact with our service targets. Some of them are even prepared by the service targets themselves.

"HKBU Community Service Week 2023 - BUild LOVE 1.0 Service Fair"


A service fair is going to be held from 16 February to 17 February, 11:30am to 3:30pm, in Amphitheatre, Shaw Campus, aiming to increase students' awareness towards underprivileged groups, through interactive booths, workshops and charity sales. For more information, please refer to the details below.

Interactive Booths

Simulation experiences and interactive games, including wheelchair experience, subdivided unit model exhibition and sign language workshop etc. will be held. Participants can learn the needs and lives of different underprivileged groups. No registration is required.

Workshops

If you would like to understand more about the needs of the elderly and physcially handicapped persons, you can join our workshops conducted by professional trainers from Eldpathy and Direction Association for the Handicapped. 

*Please be reminded that registration on SLES is required for these two workshops.
1 CCL credit can be earned for participation.

活動內容 Activity Content:

透過一些特製道具,同學將感受輪椅使者的日常生活,而輪椅使用者亦會向學生分享自己的故事,藉此傳遞共融的訊息。

 

Participants will experience the lives of physically disabled individuals through using special equipment. Wheelchair users will also share their life stories so as to promote the concept of social inclusion.

活動內容 Activity Content:

透過穿著體驗衣裝備,參加者需要進行任務,了解長者的身心狀態,過程中也會與歷耆者的長者一起完成體驗並進行交流。

 

Through completing mini-tasks using simulation equipments, participants can better understand the elderly's physical and mental state. Participants will also have a chance to communicate with elderly during the experience. 

 

Charity Sales

To strengthen the support to underprivileged groups, a chairty sales will be arranged. All income received will be used for different service initiatives of participating NGOs.

HKBU Community Service Week - BUild LOVE
Service Fair @ Amphitheatre

Seven charitable organisations were invited to provide simulation experiences and workshops to our students during the service fair, providing valuable opportunites to our students to interact with diverse underprivileged groups and get to know about their life experiences. The fair was also featured with an exhibition where students can understand more about the needs of the underprivileged and how they could offer assistance to them.

HKBU Community Service Week – BUild LOVE
First Preparatory Meeting
9 March 2023 

About 85 Student volunteers gathered for the first time, met and get to know each other through interactive games led by Organising Committee Members (OC). Professional social workers from six NGOs were invited to provide training and guidance to student volunteers. Student volunteers also discussed and designed the outline of the service they will provide on 1 April.

BUild LOVE 2.0 Service Day

1 April 2023 

On the service day, nearly 200 service recipients came to the HKBU to participate in a variety of activities designed by our volunteers, such as DIY workshops, bocce match, campus tour etc., in which they enjoyed very much. The service day also allowed our student volunteers to better understand the needs of different vulnerable groups in our society, creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
