NG Chun Hei, Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons.) in Sociology
Scholarship support has not only alleviated financial pressure but has also enabled a more focused and ambitious engagement with my studies and future planning.
I primarily allocated the funding to cover transportation costs. In Hong Kong, daily commuting by MTR and bus can be expensive for me. The subsidy reduced the need to worry about Octopus or other payment top-ups each week, allowing me to focus more on coursework and revision rather than applying for additional part-time job for basic expenses.
With this support, I was able to strengthen my academic performance and deepen my reasoning skills as I was able to purchase more essential academic materials as well as purchase more professional AI- or IT-related software. The scholarship enabled me to buy required readings instead of relying solely on limited library copies.
Currently, I am working on my final year project about sexual behavior. Alongside different kinds of research, incorporating both quantitative data and theoretical frameworks is also required in our honours group project. I believe our paper can have significant influence on demographic challenges and policy responses, demonstrating improved research design and critical evaluation of related policy effectiveness. When I encounter difficulties in narrowing research questions to manageable scopes, I always use AI tools to help us clarify our research directions. These experiences highlighted the need to further develop research planning skills and to strengthen statistical proficiency to enhance empirical analysis.
Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Despite finishing coursework, extracurricular commitments are required, especially at HKBU, which requires stricter time-management strategies. These skills also help me to pursue postgraduate study in sociology and participate in extracurricular activities at the same time. Exposure to academic discourse and fieldwork practice has clarified my long-term goal of serving society through research on the general public.
In sum, the scholarship has functioned as both material support and intellectual encouragement, shaping not only my present academic progress but also my future academic trajectory.
