KWOK Sum On, Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Humanities [Cultures in Changing Environments]

Thank you for selecting me as the recipient of the Alumni Gratitude Grant Scholarship. I am grateful for the recognition of my academic achievement.

I have been consistently delivering good academic performance. Majoring in Humanities, with my study stream in changing cultures, I am studying about social inequalities that are experienced by minorities, such as refugees, women, queer people, and non-human others in the Anthropocene. Yet I also contemplate the agency and power held by the underprivileged. I am devoted to exploring what minorities can do together as a community, speculating on different ethics and principles to bring forth equality.

For the scholarship, I plan to use it to support future study programs. I have not decided on a definite field of study, but it would be related to cultural studies. With a sensitivity for people at the margins, I would like to further explore how to summon up good ways of relating and living from the wisdom of different cultural and spiritual traditions. I study the principles of Buddhism, such as compassion, non-human-centrism and non-violence. I try to apply them to treat the ecology in a less selfish way, and practice empathy to the environment in face of the climate change. I also find inspiration from the nature and apply them to human relationships, studying the webs of relations between trees in forests to map up a holistic structure of society, with respect to people of different backgrounds, religion and sexual orientation.

My quest is to contemplate the human condition in cross-cultural and transdisciplinary studies in the future. In addition to a master's degree, I will also spend the amount to buy books and courses on psychology, counselling, psychotherapy, mutual aid, colonial studies, arts and gender studies. Thank you for funding my future research on these areas. Hopefully, with more theoretical knowledge and practice, I will be able to work as a facilitator for a caring environment. This scholarship is an important resource to help me realize my goal. I will cherish what is given to me and make the best out of it.
