CHU Tsz Yan Candace, Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Music [Music Education]
It is my honour to be a recipient of the HKBU Alumni Gratitude Scholarship. I am currently a second-year student majoring in music education and minor in Spanish. My major instrument is violin, and minor in viola. My current goal after graduation is to continue to teach violin and continue my path in music education. I am especially interested in working with students with special educational needs (SSENs).
This scholarship will contribute to my third-year university tuition, thanks to it, I can fully participate in my schoolwork and continue to grow as a musician and a music educator. In the past year, I have been able to participate in playing in the university’s symphony orchestra and performing with professional guest musicians and participate in the pop music concert with BMus Stage as a violist in a quartet setting. These concerts have been a success. Some obstacles I have encountered during the year is to allocate enough time to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle, like getting enough sleep and making sure I am consuming a nutritious diet. This would be one of the main goals in time management for the coming years as the university encourages wholesome personal growth.
I have been taking the Introduction to Music Education course and I had the opportunity to do observation reports in a primary school. I have gained a lot of valuable insights through observations, such as teaching to compose with the help of technology to encourage creativity in students. I am currently a violin teacher of seven students with two students of totally different special needs. I am heartfelt for their needs and being attentive to their needs. I truly believe that I am a good fit in terms of becoming a teacher specialized in serving SSENs.
Without this scholarship, I would not have enough financial support and might need to increase my working time and it would be more difficult for me to stay healthy. I am sincerely grateful to receive this scholarship. It motivates me to maintain my GPA and complete my degree, more importantly I can enjoy teaching and explore more teaching methods through learning music education in the university. I look forward to contributing to the community through teaching and helping more students, especially SSENs, as a music teacher.
