Title of the talk: Hong Kong LGBTQ printed matters in pre-internet era, a digital archive
Abstract: This project is a web-based archive hosting Hong Kong LGBTQ printed matters in the pre-internet era together with oral history video interviews of early queer activists. 1980’s and early 1990’s, before and after the decriminalisation of homosexual acts (1991) was crucial moment when activists laid a solid foundation for the development of LGBTQ community. Yet, very few materials from that period are on the public domain.Hence, it is vital to gather and share such treasure of paper-form materials in a digital web archive before losing them, which could be too quickly and too easily nowadays. Collection in the archive includes NGOs’ newsletters, indie zines, rare original copies of indie zines, promotional materials of events, Aids educational leaflets, government documents, meeting notes, and rare personal hand-writing letters. There are 6 oral history interviews that show the background and contexts of the printed matters which also portray the early history of LGBTQ movement in Hong Kong. The archive will be launched in Jan 2025 for free public access, hopefully to benefit LGBTQ communities, researchers and future generations.
