Title: Positioning the Selves in Assignments: Anxiety, Reproductivity, and Sexuality of Women’s Bodies
Abstract:
Gender and Sexuality Studies are not detached, objective fields; they require the researchers to position ourselves inside and beyond the research. This time, we see how we understand and practice our bodies, and how our bodies are controlled by multiple sources, with resistance all the time. We established the student society in Gender Studies for several reasons, one of which is to foster dialogue among researchers, creating a sense of companionship. In this talk, we will present the formation of our society—a community built on warmth and wisdom—and share three projects our members completed during our studies. In our first assignment, we examine body modification and aesthetics in Barbie movie, analyze the compulsory youthfulness as a patriarchal construct which is a disciplinary practice, the resistance of which has subversive potential, and suggest a solidarity of all people of varying genders, race, class, and age. In our second assignment, we investigate how nation control abortion rights to adjust fertility rates, taking South Korea as an example and reflecting Hong Kong and China. In the third assignment, comparing a previous study conducted in 1998 studying how men elaborate the submissive model of female sexuality offered to them in pornography, we analyze how five women self-claiming feminists treat the messages of pornographies they have watched, to see how they constantly think, question, and explore the constructed reality. These study interests can reflect our orientation, and through the ongoing conversations among us, gender studies connect us and more fellows.
