Safe and adequate food is a basic necessity for human survival. However, according to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals Report 2021, between 720 million and 811 million people in the world are facing hunger in 2020, an increase of as much as 161 million people from 2019. Asia accounts for more than half (418 million) of the world's hungry people and a third (282 million) in Africa.
Zero Hunger, one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, is still far from being achieved.
Food Angel is a food rescue and food assistance program launched in 2011 by Bo Charity Foundation with the mission of "Waste Not, Hunger Not, With Love".
The program rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. Following strict safety protocols, the rescued food items will then be prepared as nutritious meals in our central kitchens and food packs. They will be distributed to serve the underprivileged communities in Hong Kong.
Currently, Food Angel rescues 45 tonnes of edible surplus food each week, producing over 17,000 nutritious meals and helps distribute over 11,000 other meals and food packs daily free of charge for people who are in need of food assistance.
This time, we, the Focus Group on Sustainable Development Goals in Hong Kong Baptist University will cooperate with Food Angel to hold a volunteer activity. The students of HKBU will be invited to participate in the production of lunch boxes, experience the work of food recycling and cooking, and raise awareness of sustainable development.
