Objective
- To enrich students’ living and working experience in different cultural environment;
- To enhance students’ language and communication skills;
- To broaden students’ vision about the world of work;
- To sharpen students’ observation and challenge the quality assurance services at work; and
- To strengthen students’ life and transferable skills such as self-confidence, sense of co-operation, and problem solving.
READ THESE BEFORE YOU APPLY
(1) Student status
GAO participants’ HKBU student status must be valid on their first day of internship.
(2) Refundable deposit
For internships marked with "HK$XX deposit required", GAO applicants are required to pay a deposit at the time of online application. The deposit is non-transferable to other persons, programmes, etc., but refundable by August 2025 (subject to certain conditions as detailed below, and the processing time of the university finance office).
If an applicant receives an internship offer and accepts it
The deposit will be refunded to the applicant upon completion of the internship with satisfactory performance. This means he/she must complete the internship, fulfill pre- and post-trip formalities (including but not limited to submitting surveys, reports and photos), and receive an above-average overall rating from the employer’s evaluation.
If an applicant receives an internship offer but declines it
The deposit will NOT be refunded to the applicant.
If an applicant does not receive any internship offer by 30 June 2025
The deposit will be refunded to the applicant by August 2025.

(3) Logistics
- GAO participants are under the University Insurance Coverage: Zurich Insurance (HKBU) for the official internship period, if the last destination of their trip is Hong Kong. For details, visit https://fohome.hkbu.edu.hk/for-students/information/insurance.html.
- Unless otherwise specified, GAO participants should arrange their own visa application, flights, accommodation, and settle related expenses. They may seek advice from the Career Centre. Please note the accommodation may be included in the programme fee of some external internship programmes.

Student Sponsorships Scheme (SSS)
Eligibility
- Only for GAO face-to-face internship participants who are full-time UGC-funded undergraduates, and do not receive any sponsorship from their Faculties / Schools.
How to apply
- The application details are expected to be sent to all eligible students in June / July 2025, subject to funding availability.
Selection criteria
The sponsorship amounts are fixed depending on the destination categories. The allocation of sponsorship will depend on, but will not be limited to the profiles of applicants, such as:
- Awards received (e.g., sports / academic / non-academic awards recognised internationally / nationally / in Hong Kong / by HKBU internally / etc.);
- Achievements in co- and extra-curricular activities;
- Academic result; and
- Financial hardship (if applicable).

- The tentative sponsorship amounts below are for reference only, and are subject to further decisions of the funding sources.

Important remarks
- The sponsorship amounts depend on the approved budget of the funding sources. The level of competition among applicants varies every year. The sponsorships are therefore NOT guaranteed.
- As the expenses for overseas internships could be very high, please carefully estimate your financial budget without expecting any sponsorship.
- Tentatively the sponsorships are to be reimbursed in Jan 2026 the earliest, if the recipient completes the internship, fulfills pre- and post-trip formalities (including but not limited to submitting surveys, reports and photos), and receives no complaints from the employer, the organizer, and the Programme Coordinators of the Career Centre.
- Funding sources and the Career Centre reserve all the rights of final decision on the sponsorship matters.
