Background
With the support from the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF), the Career Centre (CC) of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) will continue to host the HKBU STEM Internship Scheme for STEM students. The scheme aims to encourage STEM students to gain innovation and technology (I&T), film, data & media, creative and health-related work experience and to foster their interest in pursuing a career.
Who Can Participate
- Employers: Companies providing internships that contain I&T, film, data & media, creative and health-related elements are welcome to support the scheme. Remote work is not allowed. This Scheme excludes internship positions that are directly subsidized by the Government.
- Students: #Both local and non-local students on this list of programmes are eligible to join the scheme.
# Local students are defined as the holders of Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card. Non‒local students are students not classified as local students and should be subject to the conditions of stay of the visa/entry permit issued to them by the Immigration Department.
Requirements of the Internship
- The internship period must be at least one month (i.e. 30 or above calendar days). However, priority will be given to companies who can offer a vacancy for three consecutive months.
- Each participating student may receive the allowance under the scheme for more than one internship place in the same academic year (September 2025 – August 2026, for a maximum of 3 months), provided that the employers are not the same and the internship periods do not overlap.
- The internship cannot be used to meet the compulsory requirement for graduation of a degree programme. If students wish to participate in the scheme while meeting the mandatory requirement simultaneously, they should consult with their School/Faculty.
Funding and Subsidy
- Subsidy amount: HK$11,490 per month, reimbursed to the employer after internship completion
- The daily rate is HK$383 per day (i.e. $11,490 / 30 days)
- The maximum duration of the subsidized period is 90 days
- The maximum subsidy for each student is $34,470 (i.e. 90 days)
- Allowance = (internship period – unpaid leave) in days x $383 / day
- The first and the last days of the internship should be working days. In case Saturday and/or Sunday are regarded as working day in the employment contract, they can be included in the subsidy calculation.
- Participating employers have to provide employment insurance and MPF to students during the employment period.

The programme runs during winter break and summer break. For Academic Year 25/26, the winter period will be from 1 December 2025 to 9 January 2026.

Guidelines and Important Notes
- Internship quotas: All the quotas will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. The number of quotas we can offer depends on your company size: 1 quota for 5-10 people, 2 quotas for 11-20, 3 quotas for 21-50, and for companies above 50 people, the quota is negotiable. HKBU CC will evaluate the employer’s company size, learning values of the internship, etc. to determine the quota for each employer. HKBU holds sole discretion in this decision.
- Mandatory Documentation: Employers must submit specific documents stated above. These documents are essential for verifying the business's legitimacy and determining eligibility for the programme.
- Submission Requirement: The application process will not proceed if the required documents are not provided. This ensures that all participating businesses meet the necessary standards.
- Site Visits: Random site visits may be conducted to ensure a suitable working environment, as remote work is not allowed. This step helps maintain the quality and integrity of the internship experience.
- Early completion: If a student does not complete the entire agreed employment period as stipulated in the contract, the employer has to provide the pro-rated pay to the student based on the actual working period. HKBU CC will reimburse the subsidy to the employer based on the actual working period provided that the actual working period is no less than four weeks (i.e. 30 or above calendar days). If the actual working period is less than four weeks, no subsidy will be reimbursed to the employer, no matter the early termination was initiated by the HKBU student or the employer.
- Right to Reject Applications: The programme reserves the right to reject any application or reimbursement request, ensuring strict adherence to the guidelines.
