By collaborating with Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF), this workshop will provide an immersive, hands-on experience in Japanese arts and culture focusing on body movements and the mind-body connection. 

 

What is Noh?

Noh Theatre (能樂, Nogaku), is a theatrical art passed down by generation since the 14th century. It encompasses various components, including music, dance, and drama, characterized by minimalist staging, elaborate costumes, and delicate masks. Noh has been designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO Content Highlights.

 

What will you Experience?

Discover the essence of Noh theatre in this immersive workshop. Begin with a multi-sensory exploration of Mu-Shin (無心), followed by an illuminating overview of Noh's rich heritage. Through guided practical exercises, experience the fundamental movements and mind-body connections that define this classical art form. Led by experienced theatre practitioners, this workshop blends traditional wisdom with contemporary insights, offering a unique gateway into Japanese theatrical artistry.

 

Objectives:
  1. Explore the distinctive elements of Noh Theatre, from its masked performances to its ritualistic movements and musical traditions.

  2. Deepen appreciation of Noh aesthetics through multi-sensory engagement, connecting traditional philosophy with embodied experience.

  3. Develop a personal resonance with this classical art form through guided physical practice and mindful exploration.

About the Facilitators:

Melissa Leung Hiu Tuen – an established theatre artist

Melissa has a multicultural and interdisciplinary background, as well as experience in various roles such as director, movement coach, performer, and dance dramaturgy. She received contemporary actor training at the Intercultural Theatre Institute in Singapore, where she studied four forms of Asian classical drama. After residing in Singapore and South Korea, she returned to Hong Kong in 2018 and joined City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC). Melissa completed her Master of Fine Arts in Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, specialising in Dramaturgy. 

 

Yolenda Cheng Kam Yiu - Hong Kong emerging theatre practitioner 

Yolenda is currently an associate artist at Siong Leng Musical Association. She honed her craft at the Intercultural Theatre Institute, where she graduated with the support of the Tan Chay Bing Education Fund Scholarship. Additionally, she completed the Professional Physical Theatre Youth Training Programme at TSW Theatre Studio. Prior to her studies, Cheng interned with the Artistic Team at the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, gaining invaluable experience in the vibrant arts scene.
