HKBU Outstanding Student Leaders Awards 2024-2025

Since the 2012-13 academic year, the HKBU Outstanding Student Leaders Awards have recognised and celebrated the exceptional leadership qualities and holistic achievements of undergraduate students at Hong Kong Baptist University. Established to foster a culture of excellence and inspire future leaders, these awards aim to acknowledge students who have made outstanding contributions to both the university and the wider community.

By honouring students who excel not only academically but also in extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership roles, the awards promote a well-rounded educational experience. They serve as a platform for students to showcase their accomplishments, encouraging their peers to engage in leadership opportunities and contribute positively to society.

The significance of these awards extends beyond mere recognition; they embody the university's commitment to nurturing future leaders equipped with the skills, values, and experiences necessary to make meaningful impacts in their communities. Award recipients are not only celebrated as role models but also gain access to valuable opportunities that can enhance their personal and professional development, reinforcing the university’s mission of holistic student growth.

In the 2024-25 academic year, up to six awards of HK$10,000 each will be available.

CHEUNG Chun Hei
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Physical Education and Recreation Management, Year 4

As a founder of Sportcanheal852, a Hong Kong-based social enterprise that promotes mental health through sports like karate, I would like to give back to society by enhancing the mental and physical well-being of older adults through mindfulness and adapted physical activities.

Drawing from the principles of karate, such as focus and discipline, my plan involves volunteering to organise workshops that teach mindfulness techniques via gentle exercises tailored to the abilities of participants in senior centres and retirement communities. I aim to advocate for integrating mindfulness and low-impact sports into programmes for older adults to improve their physical health, mental well-being, social connections, and cognitive functions.

Long-term, I envision creating a sustainable programme offering free or subsidised training, partnering with local organisations, and measuring outcomes to ensure impactful, scalable change.

I am deeply honoured to have been selected as a recipient of the 2024/25 HKBU Outstanding Student Leaders Awards. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to HKBU for the invaluable opportunities to serve as Mental Health First Aid Captain, ICAC Ambassador, and President of the Hong Kong Red Cross University Club. These experiences have significantly strengthened my dedication to integrity and humanitarian principles.

Moving forward, I hope to continue developing impactful social service initiatives that address pressing community needs and raise awareness of critical issues. I am committed to utilising my skills to support vulnerable communities and inspire my peers to engage in meaningful service, cultivating a culture of empathy and social responsibility.

SAIF Faria Asreen
Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science, Year 2

I used to think changing the world required grand achievements—until I saw how small, consistent actions create ripples.

As a budding future scientist, I want to use my training to make research more accessible. Maybe it’s troubleshooting code for a struggling labmate today, or volunteering to teach Python to biology students tomorrow. No flashy titles, just showing up—with coffee, patience, and the belief that everyone deserves a mentor who says, “Let’s figure this out together.” Real impact happens in libraries at 2 am, in Zoom study groups, and in passing along the kindness my professors showed me. That’s the science I believe in.

WAN Lok Yan
Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biomedical Science, Year 2

My aspiration is to become a responsible and professional Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner. To this end, I am committed to achieving academic excellence during my studies, as well as actively collaborating with NGOs to apply my TCM knowledge in promoting community health.

As a TCM student who is not yet qualified to prescribe medication or offer formal consultations, I focus on non-invasive TCM therapies. Over the past two years, I have used TCM food therapy, herbal sachets, and acupressure to help people maintain their well-being. Moving forward, I hope to explore more applications of TCM and contribute further to society.
