Mr. Clarence Chang張景謙先生
Music Producer • Founder of Jazz World
A veteran of the Hong Kong music industry for 40 years, Clarence Chang began his career as a music producer with a passion for "more sophisticated" music. After graduating from the School of Audio Engineering in Melbourne in 1981, he founded I.C. Records HK in 1983, pioneering independent record labels in the region. He produced acclaimed albums for pop stars like Danny Summer, Lowell Lo, Beyond, Teddy Robin, and ventured into jazz production with artists such as Dave Packer, William Tang, Outlet (Eugene Pao), and many others.
In 2001, Clarence launched Jazz World, a shop specializing in jazz CDs, which evolved into a presenter of jazz performances in 2005. His dedication culminated in co-founding Hong Kong’s first International Jazz Festival in 2008, hosting world-class acts including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Larry Carlton, Marcus Miller, and Kamasi Washington, and positioning Hong Kong firmly on the global jazz map.
Clarence continues to foster the local scene, receiving funding support from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) in 2018 to launch Jazz Marathon—part of International Jazz Day—featuring international jazz ensembles and local young artists. In 2021, he co-founded Jazz World Records with renowned recording engineer Kent Poon, releasing five albums showcasing Hong Kong’s jazz talents and documenting the growth of jazz culture.
Most recently, Clarence’s “Jazz In The Neighbourhood” project, supported by the LCSD Venue Partnership Scheme (2022–2026) for Tsuen Wan Town Hall, has organised over 20 concerts between 2022 and 2023, bringing together jazz musicians from around the world along with local talents such as Fred Hersch, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Cécile McLorin Salvant, The Aristocrats, SFJAZZ Collective, Jacob Karlzon, Wolfgang Haffner, Mambo Inn, Francesco Cafiso, Danny Summer, Eugene Pao, Ted Lo, and more, further enriching Hong Kong’s vibrant jazz culture.
