 [About the Instructors]

Ms. Mey Jen Tillyer 

Mey Jen Tillyer is considered as one of the pioneers who introduced belly dance to Hong Kong. Originally from Canada, she began her career journey in 1985, actively teaching and performing to promote the art form. 

In 2003, she founded Oasis Dance Centre, Hong Kong’s first studio dedicated to belly dancing, which has since become a hub for master workshops in Middle Eastern Dance, Flamenco, Hawaiian Dance, and Arabic Drumming. Under her leadership, it has evolved into a platform celebrating world culture, diversity, and inclusivity, gaining popularity in primary and secondary schools for its engaging cultural presentations.

 

Ms. Yoshimi Ikeda 
Originally from Japan, Yoshimi Ikeda began her belly dance journey in Hong Kong under the mentorship of Mey Jen Tillyer and has since trained with numerous world-class master teachers. With over 15 years of experience, she is an established performer, recognized for her artistry in both Hong Kong and Japan. Yoshimi offers dance classes for all ages and is particularly skilled in double fan and poi techniques.

 

Ms. Christine Lai 
Christine is a dance teacher and performer with over 15 years of experience in belly dance. She has participated in numerous public, charity, and commercial performances, showcasing her talent and dedication to the art form. In addition to teaching belly dance, Christine specializes in sensual and cabaret styles, sharing her passion for dance with students of all levels.

 

Mr. Rob Rushton 
Rob is a seasoned percussionist with a keen interest in ethnomusicology, focusing on oriental dance music since 2006. He has performed extensively at dance shows, school events, restaurants, and commercial and charity functions. He has studied under internationally renowned drum and dance teachers, including completing a certification course in Arabic Dance and Music by Karim Nagi, and now teaches percussion and Middle Eastern rhythm.

 

Ms. Shirley Chan

Shirley is a passionate percussionist and dancer, performing in a variety of dance shows, school programs, and commercial and charity events. Together with Rob, she co-owns an Egyptian restaurant in Central Hong Kong, celebrating the rich flavors and traditions of the region.

[Notes]

1. Please wear comfortable clothing when attending this workshop.

2. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation email.   

3. All applicants are required to pay a deposit of HK$100 to secure their seat. Seats will be assigned on a first-paid, first-served basis.    

4. UGC students will receive full sponsorship after participating in the event and completing an evaluation form.
