Nicole Chui (English Language and Literature)
Recipient of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship 2019-20

When I was in secondary school, my academic performance was below average and gaining a scholarship was an achievement beyond my imagination. However, the scholarship served as a solid recognition of my effort and encouragement as I worked harder in university. The award has proved that setbacks do not define your future. Obstacles are temporary, yet sustaining perseverance brings permanent changes you have never dreamed of. During the difficult times under the pandemic, I would like to emphasize the importance of bearing hope. The pandemic will be over soon, hope Hong Kong people can stay the course and stay at home.

I believe in the power of words. When words combine with emotions, even the oldest cliché inspires people. With the scholarship, I will be able to pursue post-graduate studies and acquire more in-depth knowledge of the English language. During my 2 years of study in the English department, I see many social issues yet to be solved, discrimination, poverty, political conflicts and more. With the appropriate words, misunderstandings can be removed and new insights can be developed, so I hope to make use of the power of language and raise people’s awareness towards the need of change, or even change people’s mindsets.

Apart from gaining financial support, the scholarship also provides me with opportunities such as voluntary services and visits to serve the community, which allows me to observe and know more about the specific needs of the current society. As the saying goes “He that travels far knows much”, learning through experience is more rewarding than from books and lectures. To equip ourselves for the future, we should not hesitate to join activities, voluntary work, sports teams, interest clubs and leadership programmes to learn while serving the community.

Once again, I would like to thank the Jockey Club for offering me this invaluable experience to learn. I am glad to exchange thoughts and gain inspiration from other students during the journey. Hope the city can go through the difficult times and I look forward to learning through face to face interaction again.
