Hui Ka Yan (Government and International Studies)
Recipient of HKSAR Government Scholarship 2019-20

It is my greatest honor to be the awardee of the HKSAR Government Scholarship. From preparing for the interviews to receiving the scholarship, I would deem that the process is a way of self-discovery. It motivates me to be successful in my future pursuits.

‘What kind of person are you actually?’ This was the question I was asked during the interview and I immediately reflected upon my university life to find out the answer. University is truly an amazing place that helps me to discover my true self. I am a person who can strive to be outstanding through discovering the weaknesses of myself. In the past, I was shy, timid, and not outspoken. Then I made the rightest decision ever in my life - to join the Model United Nations. From there, I find that the senior delegates there are so outspoken and outstanding. I eventually learn that to be a successful person is not just a slogan, but it is about discovering my strengths and weaknesses through learning from others and encouraging yourself to eradicate those self-limiting thoughts. So, what kind of person am I? I am determined to be successful. Success is a combination of resilience and the process of relentless striving for new heights. The question being asked in the HKSAR Government Scholarship, in fact, helps me to discover the uniqueness of myself. I learn not to be timid anymore, as well as striving for new heights. This is my uniqueness.

Only through getting clear of the uniqueness of myself, I can proceed to grasp the opportunities that float in my life. Being an awardee of the scholarship, I am certain that I can strive to be a better person. Despite being a student studying Government and International Studies, I doubted whether I should apply for the Administrative Service Internship Programme (known as an AO internship). Nonetheless, I realized that I should be confident of myself. Being shortlisted as one of the candidates, I could now equip myself with the knowledge about public policies as well as the necessary working skills. I am so proud of being awarded this scholarship, which becomes a turning point in my life. It teaches me to grasp the opportunities, scrutinize my strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly, opens the exciting journey in front of me.

I am motivated to be successful in my life. In the coming academic year, I will relentlessly find out my uniqueness. I will continue to strive for excellence and map my endless journey.
