Sharing of Scholarship Recipients

Wong Wai Wa (Religion, Philosophy and Ethics)
Recipient of Ten Pao Group Holdings Limited Scholarship 2017/18

I never expected that I would be awarded a scholarship. Here, I want to express my appreciation to my donor again and share my learning experience.

Learning attitude plays a determinant role in my study. It is what I learn after receiving the affirmation from the scholarship. Chinese Language and Literature was my favorite subject when I first joined the Faculty of Arts. One of the reasons was that I wanted to escape from English through entering a Chinese major since my English was bad. However, life is unpredictable. I studied a course which was about philosophy at that time and this course made me very interested in philosophy and religion, the interest was even greater than my interest in Chinese. Finally, I became a member of the Department of Religion and Philosophy.

Before I made the decision, I worried most that my English was not good enough to study philosophy, religion and ethics because the medium of instruction of all these courses is English. Therefore, when the first semester of my year 2 started, I promised myself that I must not let my family down, more importantly, I must not let myself down. As I have chosen to study philosophy, I am obliged to bear and tackle all the upcoming difficulties I may encounter in the program. So, I kept preparing the materials before the classes and had revision after the classes. Also, I started preparing my assignment as early as I could. What I did was only to prevent a bad result. Thus I felt very surprised that my effort was rewarded with a scholarship.

After receiving the Ten Pao Group Holdings Limited Scholarship, I tried to look back and ponder on the message of this scholarship. Finally, I summarized that learning attitude plays a determinant role in studying. We need to regard learning as a long-term fight. Everyday you have a mission. If you fail to complete the mission one day, you will become obtuse and you need to put more efforts to pick it up. But if you can complete the mission everyday, you will become more skillful. Also, since learning is a long-term mission, we should be aware of any excuse that may make us escape from the mission. We should realize that learning is a personal business and it is an important element in our life.

I understand how stressful is studying in university and the feeling of no gain after paying a lot of effort. However, this is definitely not the reason for us to give up but the reason to keep going. Giving up is more painful because people make their effort in vain.
