Recipient of HKBU Outstanding Student Leaders Awards 2017/18
Studying at Hong Kong Baptist University, I have come across many opportunities to join activities both on campus and my own faculty. With such experiences, my university life is rewarding and fruitful.
I believe being a leader does not mean you need to have a title; one can be a leader in every position. An outstanding student leader thus needs to be passionate, and willing to find opportunities to demonstrate their leadership - no matter in class or in joining extra-curricular activities. This is my attitude at school – never miss any chances.
One of the most memorable experiences of my university life was when I was in the advertising competition organised by the Young Agency, I took the initiative to take up responsibilities. I acted as a leader and facilitated group discussion. I expressed my thoughts well, and I listened to others at the same time. Our team worked efficiently and effectively, and eventually, we won the Best Campaign Award. This not only proved my ability but was also an encouragement for me to do better.
As a student leader, I still have a lot of rooms for improvement. However, being awarded as an outstanding student leader truly means a lot, it represents a milestone in my road to becoming a successful leader. In the coming year, I am very honoured to have the opportunity of being the curator of TEDx HKBU. Being the head of 4 teams, I am eager to apply what I have learnt in the past, as well as to explore more qualities of me. It is never an easy task, especially when you need to be aware of the whole picture all the time. What I am going to do is to learn from the past experiences for improvements in this year. Keep going and modify plans accordingly, and hopefully, there will be a good outcome eventually.
I have also set myself a 5-year plan to track my growth. In 5-year time, I envision seeing myself in taking up a leader’s role and advocate things I valued using my profession.
It has been some days since I looked into the world of fashion and tried to understand their business mechanism. I learnt that the fashion industry is contributing a lot to environmental pollution. Under the influence of consumerism, people tend to buy cheaper quality clothing at a low price and replace their garments every season. Although more and more retailing companies are working towards a sustainable goal, most people, especially in Hong Kong, are having low awareness of how they are damaging the mother Earth. It is, therefore, my aspiration to promote the idea of responsible purchasing and sustainable development in fashion. I hope people will care more about the quality and durability of the clothing instead of purely trend and outlook.
With my communication background and leadership ability, I would like to incorporate my profession and knowledge learnt to promote the idea of sustainable development in fashion to the public. To achieve the goal, I would first further improve my knowledge in the field, and to polish my leadership skills. Eventually, I would love to be the advocate on this issue, and lead people to protect our mother Earth.
