CHONG Ka Man (Chinese Language and Literature)
HKBU Alumni Gratitude Scholarship

It is my honour to be selected as one of the recipients of the HKBU Alumni Gratitude Scholarship. Through this sharing article, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the donors who provided me the opportunity to be awarded. In addition, I would like to share the benefits that I have received from the HKBU Alumni Gratitude Scholarship.

With the scholarship, I am able to take the courses that I am interested in, and also broaden my knowledge through learning opportunities. This knowledge and experience will be of great benefit to my future career as a teacher.

As a student with special educational needs, I am grateful to have special arrangements for classes and exams, which helped me a lot. But sometimes, I felt very stressed. Having special arrangements only improved some situations to a certain extent, but personal deficiencies still remain, so I failed to meet my expectations. I thought other SEN students and even ordinary students might also have similar emotional troubles in daily life, so I took the Mental Health First Aid Standard Course offered by the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong to know more about the knowledge related to mental health and learn the corresponding relief and first aid methods. There are also practical opportunities to practice and consolidate that theoretical knowledge, which I believe will be beneficial for me to help different students and friends in the future.

In addition, in order to help me better realize my dream of becoming a teacher, I would like to use the remaining scholarship to apply for the programme of Postgraduate Diploma in Education. This course will enable me to develop my personal qualities, including personal effectiveness, creativity, self-understanding, and the motivation and readiness for self-reflection and self-improvement. Besides, it will also enable me to learn more basic knowledge of psychology, sociology and philosophy essential for the understanding of the aims and processes of education.

Finally, I would like to thank again to our alumni and donors who enthusiastically contribute to the alma mater continuously after graduation. You have eased my financial burden and allowed me to focus more on the most important aspect of university: learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I would be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me. I also hope that more people with disabilities can get the scholarship so that they can continue to do things that they might think of, without the concern of financial and psychological situation. As a result, they are able to thrive in their own way with the help of the scholarship.
