During the 30 lessons, the method to assess diet is the remarkable skill I have learnt. In an assignment, we needed to record and assess our own 2-day diets. The lecturers first taught us the daily energy requirements and the nutrient daily intake for different age groups. Then, we used the software – Nutritionist ProTM to conduct nutrition analysis. I like this activity so much as we can apply our knowledge practically. I found that myself was in malnutrition and learnt which nutrients should be taken in order to improve my diets. Also, I found that this is important to reach daily calcium intake requirement at young age as it helps to increase bone density.

I also used the knowledge to analyse the diets of my friends and family, then gave them some suggestions on changing their diets to be more balance and healthy. My family did follow my suggestions and they became more energetic. It is meaningful to use my knowledge learnt from lessons to help others to eat healthily.

Moreover, the course also included some knowledge about food microbiology, which is super useful for our daily lives. Microorganisms are associated with food spoilage and make us ill. However, sometimes they help us reserve the food better and provide us with richer nutrient. After learning this knowledge, I can have a basic idea whether the food is spoiled and how to reserve the food better, for example, we should not place our dishes in room temperature for more than two hours. The bacteria will grow rapidly and spoil the food.

The knowledge I have learnt is practical and useful for me to build my career path as a nutritionist. After taking the course, I am more involved into the nutrition world. I hope that I can continue to learn more about this knowledge and help others to eat healthily.
