Traveling aboard has been in my bucket list since I was little and hardly could I imagine it came true, especially during the pandemic. Before going to Boston, I was a bit petrified because of my race, my ethnicity, I always questioned myself like whether I would be discriminated or barricade because of the use of language, yet I was completely wrong. When I arrived in the US, all these apprehensions I had before my arrivals were gone completely. People in the United States are very genuine and nice. Spending time in the States for a quarter of 2021, studying in one of the famous colleges in the US, exploring every tiny little thing in Boston or in other States…I did enjoy and genuinely am in love with this country.

I took two courses at Boston University: French and Creative Writing, I took French because I would like to experience and know how students study French in an English native country. I took Creative Writing because my favorite author Jhumpa Lahiri is the alumna of Boston University and graduated from Boston University, and she majored in Creative Writing. Meeting different classmates with different ethnicities in the two courses, we always shared and explored each other’s culture and learnt from each other, this experience can never replace and alter.

During the time at Boston University, I went to visit different historical places encompassing the Public Library and some museums in Boston. They astonished me as the architecture were incredibly beautiful and mesmerizing, utterly different when compared to the historical places in Hong Kong. Every day except rainy days, I would walk along the Charles River near my dormitory, enjoying the fresh air and immersing myself in the beautiful sky, pondering about my future. The time spent in Boston is engraved into my heart and I will never forget the food like the famous lobster rolls I had in Boston, the sky I looked on a daily basis and the people I met in Boston. This once-in-a-lifetime experience allows me to ruminate and anticipate for my future, like whether continue my study in other countries or immigrate to other countries.

After this exchange, I will not merely say I have learnt so many things, it will be a cliché if I do so, but I would like to emphasize how I have changed after this magnificent journey, from an introvert to extrovert, from a pessimistic person to an optimistic one. Before going to the states, I would never know to strive for my life, and I thought I would stay in Hong Kong forever. But after this wonderful journey to the States, I realized how naïve I was to think not to explore the world. Hong Kong though is a very beautiful, cosmopolitan, and loving city, it will always be great to explore more during the time we still have, as a person. Life is too short and full of adventures, and we should cherish our time to explore more before the end of us.
