Important Notes for Hiring Offices

1.     Weekly Hour Limit:

Full-time undergraduates (local and non-local), postgraduates (local and non-local), and sub-degree students (local only) should not exceed 12 hours per week during term time.

2.     Extended Work Periods:

If engaging a student for ≥18 hours/week for 4 consecutive weeks, contact the Human Resources Office before employment begins to process continuous part-time arrangements.

3.     Work Permit Verification:

Hiring staff must verify a student helper’s eligibility by checking their valid Work Permit.

4.     Hourly Pay Rate:

Effective 1 September 2024, student helper rates must align with the fixed range of $70-96/hour.

For more details, please refer to “The University's Policy regarding the Employment of Student Helpers on Campus”.

5.     Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF):

Student helpers will be enrolled in the University’s MPF Scheme unless exempt under the MPF Schemes Ordinance.

6.     Work Permit Retention:

Hiring staff may retain a copy of the work permit. Do not submit permits to the Career Centre.

7.     Missing Work Permits:

If a student works without a permit (strongly discouraged):

  • The student must submit a "Supplement of Working Hours" form.
  • The form requires staff endorsement, department chop, and must be sent to the Career Centre via campus mail within 3 working days for verification.

8.     Hour Adjustment:

If actual hours fall short of logged hours:

  • The student must complete an “Amendment of Working Hours" form.
  • The form requires staff endorsement, department chop, and must be sent to the Career Centre via campus mail within 3 working days for verification.
