The Hongkong Bank Foundation (滙豐銀行慈善基金) has approved a donation of up to HK$1,500,000 towards the HSBC Overseas Scholarship 2025/26. These scholarships aim to support students who will study in an overseas institution* for one semester OR one academic year in 2025/26 academic year.

The maximum amount of the Scholarship is HK$300,000 for each awardee to cover (1) tuition fees, (2) minimum economy class return airfare, and (3) reasonable room and board costs, books, and a small portion of living expenses.

The Scholarship is designated to

  • Local full-time non-final-year undergraduate students
  • With strong financial needs
  • Prefer a cumulative GPA (cGPA) score of 3.70 or above (or be in the top 3% of their class or met HKBU’s standard for first class honours) at the time of application
  • Have obtained a minimum total TOEFL score of 90 (Internet-based test) with scores for individual sections not lower than 22 on listening, 17 on writing, 21 on reading, and 21 on speaking; or a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5, with no components below 6.0. TOEFL or IELTS results must be available on or before 15 January 2025 for assessment. Interested students are strongly advised to sit for the TOEFL/IELTS test as soon as possible if they still do not have a valid TOEFL/IELTS results.
  • No extensive overseas studying experience


Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend the interviews – one with HKBU and/or the other one with the HSBC selection panel (if invited) in around January/February and April 2025 respectively.


HKBU will nominate 2 eligible candidates to compete with students from other universities in Hong Kong for this prestigious scholarship. The shortlisted candidates will be required to submit a short video to introduce himself/herself as required by the Donor.

Interested students must ask an academic staff to write a recommendation letter, using the HKBU letterhead with a signature. Then he/she must submit all scanned documents on the online application platform. The application deadline is 23:59, 15 January 2025 (Friday). Late applications will not be considered.

Note:

  • This Scholarship requires open competition with students from other tertiary Institutions. The award for HKBU students is not guaranteed.
  • All awardees must submit (1) a video journal within a month of completion of their overseas studies and (2) their transcript of study to HSBC within one month of their return to Hong Kong via the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).
