Semester at Sea
Founded in 1963, Semester at Sea (SAS) is the world’s premier global comparative education programme open to students of all majors from around the world. The programme is administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) and the Colorado State University is the academic sponsor. Over the past five decades, SAS sailed about 110 voyages, educated 55,000 students from 1,700 institutions around the world and travelled to more than 60 countries.
Semester at Sea equips students with the global understanding necessary to become prepared future leaders and global citizens. The academic program, offered in academic partnership with the Colorado State University, integrates comparative experiential study, interdisciplinary coursework, and relevant field labs in multiple countries. The 2018 Fall Voyage (9 September - 23 December 2018) is now open for online application at: https://www.semesteratsea.org/apply/. The US$50 application fee waiver code is "dream". Successful registration requires a deposit of US$1,000. The deposit is not an additional fee and goes towards the program fee. It can be fully refunded if applicants cancel their application 90 days prior to voyage embarkation.
C. Y. Tung Scholarship
The C. Y. Tung Scholarship is donated by the Hon Tung Chee Hwa and his family to honor his father C. Y. Tung. Each fall voyage, a minimum of two students, attending U.S. universities and five Chinese national students, attending Universities in China, are awarded a US$20,000 scholarship, which covers the tuition fee of the SAS programme. From 2014 to 2017, a total of five HKBU students were awarded the C. Y. Tung Scholarship.
The award of C. Y. Tung Scholarship is mainly based on academic merits. Applicants should attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above. Outstanding leadership and previous overseas exposure are also advantages. No selection interview is required. To get more information and download the application form of C. Y. Other Scholarships and Financial Aid
In addition to the C. Y. Tung Scholarship, there are also some other scholarships and need-based grants available for application from students joining the SAS. Details can be found at this link: https://www.semesteratsea.org/admission-aid/scholarships/. Students may apply for one or more scholarships/grants. However, students who are awarded the C. Y. Tung Scholarship are normally not eligible to receive other scholarships or grants concurrently.
Scholarship applicant must be a confirmed student of SAS in order to be reviewed for scholarship application. Therefore, applicants should have registered for SAS and paid the required deposit fee when they apply for the scholarships and financial aid. The application of all scholarships for SAS 2018 Fall Voyage, except Merit Scholarships and Need-based Grants which have no application deadline, will be closed on 18 April 2018. Applications must arrive in the ISE office in the US by the due date by post or email. The award notification will be sent to recipients on 4 May 2018.
An information session will be held at 5pm - 6pm on 25 January 2018 (Thursday) at AAB402A, in which more details about the SAS programme and scholarship application will be introduced. The 2017 C. Y. Tung Scholar from HKBU will also share his precious experiences and hints for successful application in the session.
