Semester at Sea

Founded in 1963, Semester at Sea (SAS) is the world’s premier global comparative education programme open to students of all majors from around the world. The programme is administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) and the Colorado State University is the academic sponsor. Over the past five decades, SAS sailed about 110 voyages, educated 55,000 students from 1,700 institutions around the world and travelled to more than 60 countries.

Semester at Sea equips students with the global understanding necessary to become prepared future leaders and global citizens. The academic program, offered in academic partnership with the Colorado State University, integrates comparative experiential study, interdisciplinary coursework, and relevant field labs in multiple countries. The 2020 Fall Voyage (9 September - 22 December 2020) is now open for online application at: The application fee waiver code is "dream". Successful registration requires a deposit of US$1,000. The deposit is not an additional fee and goes towards the program fee. It can be fully refunded if applicants cancel their application 90 days prior to voyage embarkation (i.e. 9 June 2020, US time).

C. Y. Tung Scholarship

The C. Y. Tung Scholarship is donated by the Hon Tung Chee Hwa and his family to honor his father C. Y. Tung. Each SAS voyage that visits China, a small cohort of US and Chinese students are awarded a USD25,000 scholarship, which almost fully covers the SAS programme fees. Since 2014, a total of seven HKBU students have been awarded the C. Y. Tung Scholarship.

The award of C. Y. Tung Scholarship is mainly based on academic merits but outstanding leadership and previous overseas exposure are also advantages. No selection interview is required. Other Scholarships and Financial Aid

In addition to the C. Y. Tung Scholarship, there are also some other scholarships and need-based grants available for application from students joining the SAS. Details can be found at this link: Students may apply for one or more scholarships/grants. However, students who are awarded the C. Y. Tung Scholarship are normally not eligible to receive other scholarships or grants concurrently.

Scholarship applicant must be a confirmed student of SAS in order to be reviewed for scholarship application. Therefore, applicants should have registered for SAS and paid the required deposit fee when they apply for the scholarships and financial aid. The application of most scholarships/financial aid for SAS 2020 Fall Voyage will be closed on 17 April 2020, and the award results will be annoucned via email on 3 May 2020. Interested students should apply as early as possible since the voyage is rapidly filling up.

Information Session

An information session will be held during 12:30pm - 1:30pm on 14 February 2020 (Friday) at iCafe Activities Room (next to Pacific Coffee), Shaw Campus, in which more details about the SAS programme and scholarship application will be introduced. The 2018 C. Y. Tung Scholar from HKBU will also share his precious experiences and hints for successful application in the session.
