Introduction Preparations Enquiries

Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) is used by the Civil Service Bureau to assess candidates’ language and reasoning ability. The examination consists of three papers: (1) Use of Chinese; (2) Use of English; and (3) Aptitude Test. In addition, Basic Law Test (BLT) has been introduced to assess candidates’ Basic Law knowledge. The result of BLT may reflect the awareness of current affairs of candidates and provides information for employers to consider the suitability of candidates for the job.

Application details

The next round Common Recruitment Examination and Basic Law Test (Degree/ Professional Grades) (CRE and BLT) will be held on 4 and 11 October 2014 in Hong Kong. For the convenience of those studying or residing outside Hong Kong, the above examination will also be held on 6 December 2014 in seven other cities, namely Beijing, London, San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Vancouver and Sydney.

CRE & BLT application details
The application period for the coming CRE and BLT to be held in Hong Kong will be from 1 to 14 August 2014 while application for sitting the examination outside Hong Kong will be opened from 16 to 29 September 2014. Applicants may choose to take any of the CRE papers and / or the BLT paper in this examination either in Hong Kong OR in one of the cities outside Hong Kong. The application details and an on-line application system will be available on our webpage at www.csb.gov.hk/eng/cre.html during the application periods.

The CRE and BLT are open to all holders of degree or professional qualifications who are interested in applying for civil service posts at degree or professional level. Students who will have attained a degree in the 2014-15 academic year may also apply to take the coming CRE and BLT for future job applications.

Government recruitments in September 2014
Besides, the Government is going to launch a new round of recruitment exercises for the posts of Administrative Officer (AO), Executive Officer II (EOII), Assistant Labour Officer II (ALOII) and Assistant Trade Officer II (ATOII) in September 2014. Please pay attention to the announcements from Career Centre (http://sa.hkbu.edu.hk/career) and local newspapers, and visit the website of CSB (http://www.csb.gov.hk/eng/cre.html) regularly for latest information.

Applicants would need to have obtained LEVEL 2 in Chinese and English languages of CRE (or equivalent results) AND a PASS in its Aptitude Test of CRE as part of the entry requirements for the posts.
Thus, applicants need to submit BOTH the application for the posts in September and the application for sitting CRE/BLT in early August separately. Applicants for the said posts will NOT be automatically arranged to attend the coming CRE and BLT.

Mock practices for CRE & BLT

In order to help students to familiarize with the CRE/BLT format, Career Centre will organize a series of mock practice sessions and workshops in September.
